Why no high fructose corn syrup?

Others have asked me, and I’ve asked myself–why is not eating any food with high fructose corn syrup a goal of mine for this year? Great question. Honestly, it’s kind of a whim-of-a-goal. I’ve read a few things, and talked with a few people, that have told me a few good reasons. Here they are:

  • Health reasons
    • Contributes to obesity.
    • Contributes to diabetes.
    • One of the main ingredients in soda, candy, donuts, and most fatty foods = don’t add to my burgeoning waistline.

There is controversy and conflicting literature about harm from fructose. The dose of fructose from naturally acting foods is modest is fruit ingestion is likely to provide more benefits than harm.

I guess the net result of my (admittedly) goofy goal is that I’m avoiding foods that are loaded with HFCS–specfically, soda pop, certain ice cream, most candy, donuts, etc. Perhaps HFCS may be the least of the bad things from these foods, but my goal is keeping me from eating them.
